Hi, I'm Marla. Okay, I have to ask before we order: do you think they rehearse the finishing-each-other's-sentences thing, or is it a gift they were born with?

Hi. Um. I'd say rehearsed, but I'd want evidence. They have the timing of a duet, which is a skill you can practise, not a gift. Did you notice something specific about them, or is it just the mood?

Something specific, yes. The one on the left started a sentence about the bread, and the other finished it before she'd even looked at the basket. Either that's practice or telepathy, and I'm hoping for telepathy, because practice is more embarrassing.

Nell Abiodun portrait

Sorry, I have to correct that. The basket was in her line of sight, so it's peripheral vision, not telepathy. Then again, you're hoping for telepathy, so I'll allow it. Why is practice more embarrassing to you? Does it mean they've been working at being a couple?

The challenge

Marla Finch portrait
Marla Finch

Because practice means somebody decided to be a duet, and then asked the room to clap. I collect maps of places that don't exist anymore, so I'm biased toward things nobody meant to be seen. Who do you think they're rehearsing for, though? Each other, or the table?

Honestly, I'd say they're rehearsing for the table, the way you'd rehearse a toast. Ah, the tray just went, and that's a lot of water on a lot of trousers. Here, take my napkin. Wait, you're a map conservator? How do you check an old chart against a place that's gone?

Marla Finch portrait

Not a conservator, just a collector who buys maps nobody wants and stares at them. I check the coastline first, because rivers wander and roads get renamed, but a coast is stubborn. Then I look for the surveyor's mistakes. Those tell you someone actually stood there.

Yes! Exactly that. My favourite is a sounding marked in a bay that's now a car park, so somebody stood in the water to take it. Do you check the spellings too? Sorry. Ladies and gentlemen, the duet has been drenched, but the napkins prevail!

The decision

I'm going to be plain with you. The bow to the room was the moment for me. I've had enough of people who play to the audience, so I won't see you again. Thank you for the napkin, though. Good luck, Nell.

The date

First impressions

Act 1: Marla arrives with ink on her fingers and a locked-out story to tell. Nell apologises for rehearsing her hello, and the smug couple immediately finishes Marla's joke for her. Marla gives Nell a dry look, and Nell answers with a fact about the bistro's Victorian tiles.

The challenge

Act 2: The bistro's card machine fails just as the bill lands, and the smug couple insists everyone splits it evenly. Marla and Nell have to work out who owes what on the back of a napkin. Nell offers a long history of the card machine, and when Marla asks a second question about it, Nell launches into a full, delighted tour. Marla laughs, but it is the tour, not the joke, that she notices.

The decision

Act 3: Outside in the rain, the smug couple leaves arm in arm, still finishing each other's sentences. Marla says she enjoyed the chat, but that she wants someone who makes her laugh without the lecture. Nell nods, says it was a long answer, and wishes her well. Neither suggests anything further.

The twist

The card machine problem is solved by a waiter, and the only thing that actually goes wrong is the two of them discovering they want different things from the evening.

The finale

Marla gently turns Nell down, saying the evening was pleasant but she does not feel the spark she is looking for. Nell accepts it with a polite apology for the tour. Neither wants another date, and they part ways in the rain.

Ending: A disaster

The box score

Chemistry67+17
Attraction69+21
Trust46+1
Awkwardness43+3
How this was scored

A disaster: Marla's dealbreaker tripped, trust 46 finished low, and that outweighed attraction 69. The weak spot was awkwardness: how stiff it got. Endings read where the numbers finished, not how far they moved. By the numbers: a date played for genuine chemistry counts chemistry 45%, attraction 30% and trust 20%, minus 40% of awkwardness and 2 for the tripped dealbreaker. This one came out +11.0 against an ordinary date: friends needs +11.0, a second date +16.0.

“I didn't come for the tour, Nell. I came to laugh.”
